Steel Roofs

Steel is an alloy of iron that is made by combining iron with other elements. Steel is one of the most popular building materials that is used in various aspects of building constructions including for roofing buildings. It is a highly recyclable material, very durable and an economical roofing solution compared to zinc, aluminum, and other metal roofing options.

Types of steel roofing

There are three main types of steel roofing materials and this included galvanized steel, weathering steel, and galvalume. Each of these steel roofing types has unique pros and cons.

  • Galvanized steel: Galvanized steel is the most common type of steel roofing material. This is a type of steel roofing that is created by adding a layer of zinc as a coat. This effectively protects it from corrosion and will extend the life of your steel roof.
  • Galvalume Steel: Galvanume is similar to galvanized steel. However, in this case, rather than coat the steel with zinc, a combination of zinc and aluminum is used. Since aluminum offers greater protection in certain areas (e.g. coastal regions), Galvanum is suitable for use in areas where regular steel or galvanized steel would not work. It also offers better surface protection. However, it is more prone to scratches and cut edges.
  • Weathering steel: this is a type of steel material that was originally intended for use for heavy steel constructions such as in bridges. In weathering steel, the outer layer of steel is intentionally rusted and this helps to protect the inner layer and extend the lifespan of the steel. This form of steel roofing material is more commonly used in roof accents and it has unique maintenance need compared to other steel roofing options.

Why Steel?

Steel is the least expensive of all the metal roofing materials. It is priced much lower than zinc, copper, or aluminum. This makes it quite affordable and with many of the benefits of other roofing options. More recently, advancements in steel roofing technology have also made it possible to mimic the appearance of materials like zinc and copper with a steel roofing installation. Steel is also quite flexible and can be used for a wide range of commercial and residential roofing projects. The wide range of use, availability, and low cost are some of the reasons why this material will be the perfect fit for your project.

Green Roofing With Steel

Steel is considered one of the most environmentally friendly roofing options. It is a highly recyclable material. Steel roof shingles are made almost entirely from recycled materials and can be recycled as well which makes them such an environmentally-friendly choice.

Strong And Durable

Steel is one of the hardest metal roofing options. This makes it suitable for use in a wide range of environments. It is a long-lasting roofing solution and is a preferred choice for roofing buildings in areas with harsh weather conditions like high snow volume, hail, and high winds. It is less prone to damage and will last longer than many of the other roofing options. The possibility of using galvanized steel and galvalume further improves the durability of steel roofing materials.
